Upcoming Events!

Hey everybody! We have a LOT of events coming up in the next couple of weeks, so come on by and check them out!

Monsanto Teach-In/Discussion – Wednesday February 16th at 7:00 PM

This will be “a community meeting for people concerned about Monsanto monopoly” and the subject of GMOs. There will be at least one speaker who will be well educated on the subject of the problem, and would like to share organic, urban, and sustainable gardening tips with others.

For some basic information on resistance to the Monsanto monopoly, as well as the dangers of GMOs:

General Volunteers Meeting – Thursday February 17th at 6:30 PM

Come to our General Volunteers Meeting to learn more about the inner-workings of the Flying Brick Library & help us keep doing what we do!

The last meeting was really productive, and we are hoping to make that an ongoing trend. In order to keep things alive, we always need more, new, interested people to contribute. We want you to be a part of it!

Alternative Black History Month Event – Friday February 18th at 7:00 PM

An interactive event with a focus on the rich-yet-hidden history of Richmond! Our Alternative Black History Month event last year was so awesome that we decided to have another one. Please come and join in on this important discussion, share your knowledge, and learn something new about your local history. Will probably include conversation around the Burial Ground controversy currently happening in Richmond.

Mind(ful) Liberation Project Speak Out! Event – Saturday February 19th from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Everyone knows at least one person that experiences what society deems a “mental illness.” We want to break the stigma that comes with viewing and experiencing life differently from the supposed norm. We have gifts to share, to cultivate, to embrace.

Come join Richmond’s Icarus Project chapter, Mind(ful) Liberation Project, in celebrating our psychological diversity and speaking out about our experiences existing in this institutionalized society of psychiatry and psychology. In a world gone mad, no one is alone.

Local artists include:
Acoustic performances by Alison Self, Erin Kemmerer, Herschel Stratego, Jean-Baptiste Stowell & Black Liquid
Readings by Ellen Crawford, Annie Johnson, Stacey Randolph, Elizabeth Albrecht, Megan Osborn & Kayce Johnson
Visual art by Courtney Ford, Mark Delboy, Megan Osborn & Ken Jorgenson

We will also have a raffle for mental health and psychology-related books donated from Chop Suey Books! Raffle tickets will go for $1 each.

Dinner will start at 6pm and the event will start at 7pm. There will be vegan, vegetarian, and meat dishes available (all labeled!). The suggested donation price for dinner is $8. Donations will go towards Mind(ful) Liberation Project future events and defraying the cost of printing fliers and our Coping Skills and Speak Out zines.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week Event– February 22nd at 7:00 PM

A multimedia, interactive event. Karen, from A Karen Touch Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, will be speaking. From her website “…My clientele include those who experience low self esteem, body image, or eating disorder issues. With a “come as you are” philosophy – you will never be judged and will receive the support you need to be nurtured…the essence of my practice is to empower each client so that they heal themselves”.

There will also be several video clips, as well as a group discussion on the invisibility and exclusion of men, people of color, and others from the more mainstream discussion on eating disorders and body image issues.

There will be a resource zine available, put together by our volunteers. This zine will include not only resources from the library, but from the community as well.
